Prophets 1

Présentation

The label « prophetic » has been given to different texts and different offices of Ancient Near-East. The texts qualified as « prophetic » include predictions (or apparent predictions), eschatology or apocalyptic, social or religious criticism, communications of messages from the gods. The persons who prophesied were either regular priests (Egypt), professional soothsayer (Western Asia) and those who spoke directly uner divine orders1 . It means that the comparative discussion about prophecy is led by the definition given by each scholar to what is « prophecy ». For some, a prophet is critical of his society; for others, a prophet tells the future; for others, a prophet is more generally a charismatic messenger speaking in the name of the gods. Let us focus here on texts about prophecy understood as an inspired speech coming from the gods, speech most often clear or self-explanatory for those who hear it.
