E-Seminar: Gender Equality : Culture, Religion and Politics

Gender equality (equality of the sexes) refers to the state of equal and ease access to resources and opportunities by everyone, regardless of gender. This is at the heart of human rights and United Nations values. This seminar focusses on the notion of gender equality from religious, cultural and political perspectives. Several questions will be explored from a multidisciplinary perspective. What is gender equality? How does religion define gender equality? How do different cultures define gender equality? Are there new ways of defining and understanding gender equality? How does religion affect the conception and understanding of gender equality? Does religion promote gender equality? How can gender equality be promoted at all levels from the perspectives of leadership and decision-making? Is there a contest or tension between gender equality a culture? How does culture, tradition and/or customs affect our understanding and conception of gender equality?

 

Objectives

By the end of this seminar, one should be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of gender equality in relation to religion, culture and politics
  • Analyse how religion affect the conception and understanding of gender equality
  • Analyse how culture, tradition and different customs affect the conception and
    understanding of gender equality
  • Reaffirm the centrality everyone’s equal participation and leadership in political and
    public life.
  • Analyse contemporary trends and complexities with reference to gender equality
