The Rectorate, the faculties, and the entire teaching staff are pleased to announce the creation of the Laboratory for Intelligence and Pedagogical Research (LIRP), a space dedicated to innovation and excellence in distance education. For 25 years, Domuni Universitas has been a pioneer in online higher education, combining linguistic diversity, pedagogical innovation, and transculturality. The LIRP extends this mission by bringing together teachers, researchers, and experts with a shared goal: to rethink pedagogical practices and develop innovative solutions for distance learning.

Dr. Jean-Louis Meylan, scientific coordinator of the LIRP, eloquently outlined the fundamental concepts underpinning this initiative. The LIRP is a place where creativity and experimentation come to life, a ground for exploration where ideas are cultivated to yield new perspectives. The term "laboratory," derived from laborare—to till the land—aptly illustrates the mission of the LIRP: to break new ground, take risks, and demonstrate courage in exploring uncharted pedagogical territories. Dr. Meylan reminds us that true innovation requires pushing the boundaries of knowledge, embracing the risk of error as a necessary step toward collective success.

Transculturality at the Heart of the LIRP

Drawing on its expertise in philosophy, theology, social sciences, history, and the arts, Domuni Universitas fosters dialogue between these disciplines and technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). We believe that major pedagogical breakthroughs emerge from the intersection of diverse fields and perspectives. As Dr. Meylan highlights, intuition—what he refers to as "intelligence exceeding the speed limit"—is essential for genuine innovation.

A fundamental aspect of the LIRP is its commitment to collective intelligence, reflected in the willingness of educators to say "we" rather than "I." In an academic world often fragmented by disciplinary boundaries, the LIRP embodies a collaborative approach. Each teacher and researcher contributes to a shared intellectual edifice, multiplying perspectives and fostering interdisciplinary dialogue. By working together, we can better grasp the challenges of higher education in a digital age and propose solutions adapted to a constantly evolving learning environment.

Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Considerations

The LIRP places a strong emphasis on the potential of artificial intelligence, but beyond its technological promises, it also engages with the ethical challenges AI raises. How can we ensure the responsible use of these technologies in education? How do we prevent them from creating new inequalities among learners? These questions will be addressed collectively, drawing on insights from philosophy, theology, and the social sciences. The aim is to develop responsible pedagogical practices that uphold the dignity and rights of students while leveraging cutting-edge technological tools.

Multilingualism as a Vector for Innovation

The linguistic diversity at Domuni Universitas—French, English, Spanish, Italian, and Arabic—is a major asset for the LIRP. This multilingualism fosters openness and intercultural dialogue, enriching our reflections and enabling us to adapt pedagogical strategies to diverse student populations. The LIRP, as a transcultural space, seeks to harness this diversity as a source of educational innovation.

A Research-Based Approach to Pedagogical Development

The activities of the LIRP, which blend theory and practice, will be guided by "clinical vignettes"—real-world case studies drawn from Domuni Universitas’ daily experience. This method will allow for an in-depth analysis of practical challenges, such as the mentor-student relationship in distance education, and the development of tailored solutions. One of the first key topics will be cyber-mentoring, a cornerstone of our pedagogical model. By leveraging concrete case studies, the LIRP aspires to develop innovative teaching methodologies based on experimentation and gradual refinement.

Scientific Governance and International Collaboration

The governance of the LIRP is entrusted to a scientific council composed of internal and external researchers and faculty members, who will oversee the laboratory’s research and assess its outcomes. This structure ensures academic rigor and the relevance of our inquiries. Dr. Jean-Louis Meylan, as the scientific coordinator, will play a central role in implementing strategic orientations and coordinating projects.

The research conducted at the LIRP will be disseminated through academic publications, particularly in our journal Télos, and through the development of training modules for higher education instructors. These modules will aim to support faculty members in integrating digital tools and innovative teaching methods into their practice. Additionally, the LIRP will actively participate in international research networks, contributing to the global academic discourse on digital pedagogy.

A Collective Vision for the Future of Distance Learning

More than just a research initiative, the LIRP embodies a broad, collective vision for the future of higher education in the digital age. By leveraging the intellectual resources of our university and embracing linguistic and disciplinary diversity, we aspire to establish the LIRP as a leading force in pedagogical innovation.

We warmly invite faculty, researchers, and academic partners to join this journey—to contribute to this collective reflection and actively participate in the development of new pedagogical approaches that will serve students and the wider academic community.

The inaugural session of the LIRP will take place on March 5, 2025, bringing together the first cohort of affiliated faculty and researchers from Europe (Switzerland, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy), Africa, the Arab world, and the Americas. As outlined in its Charter, the laboratory will operate in French, English, and Spanish simultaneously."
